Soho Wrist Bag

This designer, The Folk Art Factory, doesn’t often do evening bags. She finds them fussy. However, sometimes we need one to go with an outfit. You cannot turn up to the opera with a hiking rucksack! Apparently. She knows that now. So the Soho Wrist Bag was born.

You could totally make this one for daytime too but she decided to give it an evening spin because, well, you know, she has kinda neglected that area. It is hands-free because that is convenient but it is still well designed with pockets for all of your needs. You can take it from evening to daytime by changing the fabric, it is literally that easy!

This bag pattern features an external zipper pocket, an internal zipper box pocket, and two internal lined slip pockets. There is also a hand-drawn template to help you to fit the gusset properly. The designer knows that hand-drawn is old school but this way she knows it works.

Sizing info:
8 ½” high x 8 ½” wide x 4” deep

Skill level:
Confident beginner to intermediate with some knowledge assumed. You will be putting a zipper pocket in (but don’t worry, the designer will lead you through that) and you will be adding darts. They are easy too, to be honest, and when you are finished, you will have two new skills. There is a template too so you are not on your own. Otherwise, the pattern is plain sailing!

Suggested Fabrics:
Quilting weight cotton, denim, canvas, furnishing fabrics, linen, needlecord. A TIP from the designer is to NEVER pass a curtain or furnishing remnant bin without having a rummage if you are a bag maker! Those fabrics are the perfect weight!

Materials needed:

• ½ a yard of canvas or similar for the main outer of the bag (you will have some left over but you need more than a fat quarter),
• One fat quarter of canvas or similar in a solid colour for the handles, outer trim and facings,
• ½ a yard of lining fabric to coordinate with your outer fabric. The designer says - always use pure cotton, it really gives the best results,
• ½ a yard of style-vil foam interfacing (Vlieseline),
• One fat eighth of S320 fusible interfacing (Vlieseline),
• One 4 ¼" long gold zipper for the front zipper pocket. The designer used a continuous metalized plastic zipper. The oddness of this size which suits the bag perfectly means that a continuous zipper gives you the most freedom of choice. You can also shorten a longer zipper,
• One 5 ½” plastic zipper to coordinate with the lining for the inner zipper box pocket,
• Something to decorate the zipper pull of the front pocket. The designer loves to use a piece of leather or vegan leather but ribbon or baker’s twine looks awesome too. If you are going full-on evening and you have some basic jewelry supplies, think about making the zipper pull decorations from beads,
• Basic sewing supplies,
• A sewing machine.

The pattern:
This is a measure and cut pattern which means that you don’t have any templates (pattern pieces) to print off and match up- Yay! You need a rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat, and you can cut the pattern pieces straight from the fabric. This is easier than it sounds because the pieces are all simple squares and rectangles. You can transfer the cutting measurements to paper to create your own paper template/pattern piece if you prefer to use them.
